3 Game-Changers That Leveled Up My Cut Flower Garden Business This Year
Running a cut flower garden business is as rewarding as it is challenging. Every season brings its own lessons, and this year, I leaned into a few key changes that made a massive difference in both productivity and aesthetics. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to fine-tune your flower-growing operation, I’m excited to share the three things that truly leveled up my flower farm this year.
1. Investing in a Greenhouse
I’ll be honest: making the decision to invest in a greenhouse felt like a leap. But it quickly proved to be one of the best choices I’ve made for the business. With the greenhouse, I was able to:
• Start seedlings earlier, giving me a head start on
•Provide more consistent growing conditions, which meant healthier, stronger plants
The ability to control temperature and protect tender starts from unpredictable weather gave me a noticeable edge. We purchased our greenhouse from backyarddiscovery.com, it’s the 11x7 Bellerose greenhouse.
2. Picking a Color Scheme
It might sound simple, but narrowing down my flower palette to a defined color scheme was a game-changer. Instead of planting a bit of everything and hoping for cohesion, I focused on a harmonious palette of soft pastels for Spring annd Sunset Blush colors for summer.
Here’s why it worked:
• My bouquets looked more intentional and elegant
•It simplified harvesting and bouquet-building
•My brand identity became stronger and more recognizable
Customers started saying things like, “I knew this was yours as soon as I saw it!” That’s the kind of recognition every small business hopes for—and color consistency made it happen.
3. Using Hortonova Netting
If you’ve ever dealt with tangled stems or wind-damaged blooms, you know the struggle is real. This year, I finally incorporated Hortonova netting into all my rows—and wow, what a difference.
This simple trellising system provided:
•Strong vertical support for tall, delicate stems like snapdragons and cosmos
•Easier harvesting with cleaner, straighter stems
•Fewer losses due to breakage or overcrowding
It also saved time. I wasn’t constantly re-staking plants or untangling blooms. Hortonova gave the garden structure and helped each plant reach its full potential—literally.
Final Thoughts
Every flower farmer’s journey is different, but if you’re looking for ways to elevate your business, these three upgrades are worth considering. A greenhouse gave me control. A color scheme gave me cohesion. And Hortonova netting gave me support (in every sense of the word).
Have you made any changes that transformed your growing season? I’d love to hear what’s worked for you—let’s grow!
Spring is here
Spring is here! We made it! I know that itch to get your garden going is in full force. We all feel the change in weather, the birds singing, and the need to get our hands in the dirt. However, before you go and do all of that, I just want to give a little heart check reminder. My encouragement to you is to try and not get wrapped up in the overwhelm that seems to flood our social media streams about what to do when to starting a garden and how to build the most aesthetically pleasing raised beds. The happiness I felt working in my little 4x6’ garden bed that I had in town; is the same happiness I feel now in my much larger garden in the country. Why? Because, whether you garden in a small or large area, gardening is about being outside, enjoying God’s creation, learning to cultivate and care, and reaping the benefits of your hard work and dedication to caring for your plants in the way of delicious fruits and veggies. Happy gardening!
